fruits are skyrocketing in the markets in Pasighat and other places. The price of
a kg of Langra mango costs Rs 100, Dussera (Dosahari) mango costs Rs 80 and Fazali
mango costs Rs 50. Most of these mango consignments are brought to Arunachal from
West Bengal, Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Malda. Even the prices of apples
brought to the State from Kashmir, Fiji and New Zealand cost around Rs 200 – 220
per kg. Prices of fruits are almost the same in the fruit markets of Assam located

Sources said that price of all fruits have become 50 per cent costlier than last year. It is said that fruit markets is controlled by the traders sitting in Guwahati, Kolkata, Allahabad, Banaras, Kashmir and Malda.
Alleging that the controlling authorities has no control over the soaring market prices, the locals demanded administration’s immediate intervention to regulate the market prices.
JMF Court takes up media attack cases
NAHARLAGUN, Jul 31: The judicial first class magistrate court of Talo Potom has actively started pursing few cases of attacks on media persons.
Potom was appointed specifically to expeditiously try ongoing and pending cases of attacks on media persons and media houses by state government as assured by Chief Minister Nabam Tuki to the media fraternity.
The 10 accused arrested by the Capital police in connection with the April 15 Arunachal Times vandalism case (86/2012 u/s 454/4247/34 IPC) appeared before the court on Saturday last for recording their confessional statements. The bail application of one of the accused was heard Monday.
On being pleaded under section 12 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2000 that the accused was a minor, the JMF, in his order, directed the chief medical superintendent of Arunachal State Hospital here to constitute a medical board to determine his age and submit the report within a week. Moreover, the JFM also directed the police to keep him in safe and separate custody till the receipt of the medical report, before posting the next hearing to August 07 next.
Two more cases, namely State Vs Venkata Laxmipati and others u/s 341/354/427/506/ 509 IPC (Assault case of The Sentinel Arunachal reporters Appu Gapak and Nyapi Bomjen) and u/s 440/324/34 IPC (Assault case of Dawnlitpost associate editor V Ravindran) are being pursued by the court and summons have been issued for hearing, according to court sources.

45 days residential theatre workshop concludes at RGU
Rono Hills, Jul 31: The 45 days residential theatre workshop organized by the National School of Drama, New Delhi, in collaboration with the Hindi department of Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), concluded here yesterday evening with display of series of Dramas themed as “ Tales of past and Present” based on the local folklores of different tribes of Arunachal Pradesh.
Attending the valedictory the function, MLA Passang Dorjee Sona, said Arunachal though a late starter in the field of Drama is catching up with the mainstream national artistes with our talented youths. Given the required grooming they can create miracles and can be the best artiste in the country, he said. Drama, besides being a source of very good entertainment is also a very effective medium to send the crucial messages on cultural heritage, national integrity and development to the common masses.
He congratulated the Director of the Drama, Riken Ngomle who has created a place for himself in the field of national drama and advised him to properly guide the youths of the state to that line.
Sona assured the organizers of his unstinted support and cooperation to the National School of Drama in grooming the local youths in the field.
Secretary Cultural Affairs, IPR, etc, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, Indra Mallo appreciated Ngomle and the artistes for their efforts in beautifully and lucidly depicting the local folklores in the form of plays which, according to her, would give continuity to the rich cultural heritage of the state besides opening the floodgate to thousands of folklores of different tribes of the state to the field of Drama which so far remained untouched .

Association opposes selection of new airport site
ITANAGAR, Jul 31: Claiming that the people had already donated land free of cost for construction of Greenfield airport at Karsingsa, Banderdewa Karsingsa Youth Welfare Association (BKYWA) has appealed the Airport Authority of India and state Govt to change its decision to implement the greenfield airport project at Hollongi.
Opposing the reported AAI’s objection for construction of airport at Banderdewa due to hilly terrain and safety and security reason, the Association said that there is no any reason to change the location for the airport and Banderdewa is the perfect place for it.
The AAI authority had gave its assurance not to change the location for the airport and land for this purpose had already been demarcated at Banderdewa, the Association added.
Decision welcomed
While welcoming the reported decision for construction of green field airfield at Hollongi, the All Papum Poma Students Union has urged the authorities to take necessary step for construction of the airport at the earliest. It appealed the NGOs and individuals not to interfere in selection of airport site by the AAI.

Cleanliness drive
ITANAGAR, Jul 31: Engineering Colony Welfare Committee (ECWC), Ziro conducted a day long cleanliness drive cum social service at the colony on July 28.
The department of PWD and UD provided men and machineries and other materials like cements for the social service. Ajay Electrical also provided 5 bags of cements for the purpose.
Earlier, Power Deptt Ziro also helped committee by providing and repairing old street light in the colony.
On the same day, few speed breakers in the road were constructed and few hoardings erected. The Colony Welfare Committee urged colony dwellers to keep their colony clean and hygienic.
Unions oppose land regularization policy
ITANAGAR, Jul 31: Students unions and community based organizations of various districts, in a general body meeting convened by All Papum Pare District Students’ Union (APPDSU), have resolved to protect the public premises from illegal encroachment and occupation by any individual/party in all the districts of the state.
The representatives of the unions and organizations, while highlighting the illegal encroachment problem and occupation of public premises in the Capital Complex and other districts demanded the State Government to immediately cancel the Cabinet Decision passed on 2nd May 2012 saying that the land regularization policy adopted was against the interest of the public of state. The meeting gave the state government week time to roll back the Cabinet decision failing which, it said, mass democratic movement will be launched all over the state.
The meeting was attended by representatives of various District Students Unions, Community Students Organizations, welfare associations and branch Students Unions, including Papum Pare Unemployed Engineer’s Association, Arunachal Law Students’ Union besides former students leader of district and state, senior citizens and like minded citizens, APPDSU said in a release.

ITANAGAR, Jul 31: A volleyball tournament in memory of late Leki Dorjee, father of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu began at Jang, 40 km from district headquarters Tawang, on July 30.
Addressing the inaugural function, Thingbu anchal chairperson Passang Lhamu and CO P Dorjee recalled the invaluable services rendered by the former chief minister, a keen sportsperson and lover of all games and sports.

Is anyone empowered to ban RTI Act ?
Dear Editor,
While congratulating all newly elected office bearers of East Kameng Social Welfare & Cultural Organization (EKSWCO), I would like to mention here that both Jabu Lapung and Loga Tallong in their letters “Few Words regarding “EKSWCO conference” and “EKSWCO conference was a mere confabulation of elites” respectively have rightly highlighted the essence of the RTI. EKSWCO members must realize the need of RTI in the district in particular and state as a whole.
We came to know that an agenda was moved in the EKSWCO conference held in July 21 and 22 regarding ‘RTI activities and its impact on society’ and surprisingly a resolution was also adopted for banning RTI activities in the district.
Unfortunately, the speaker in the EKSWCO conference, who dared to speak against the RTI Act and went on to argue that RTI activities had adverse impacts, was none but a highly educated elite member of the society and senior government officer. He even termed the RTI activists as blackmailers and the RTI a weapon of blackmailing.
The view of the speaker in the conference has not only misguided the EKSWCO members, but also given wrong message to the people of the district and the new generation. One wonders, if he is a clean government officer, why is he scared of the RTI Act? Further, ethically, a government employee cannot go against Acts, like RTI Act, which have been enshrined in the Constitution of the Country. It is unbecoming act on the part of a Govt servant.
EKSWCO members may not be aware that there are corruptions in most of the departments in East Kameng district and this is apparently the highest in the state. Corruption is visible in all the projects and schemes here.
If the EKSWCO members are not motivated by some vested interests they should ponder on these issues in the greater interest of people of the district. They should remember that our RTI activist Payi Gyadi was conferred the Citizen Journal Awards by the international News Channel CNN IBN. Gyadi belongs to this East Kameng District and his dedicated efforts have unearthed many corruptions in the district. Many corrupt officers and officials were punished and had their services terminated for their misdeeds. The positive impact of this RTI is that, government officers and officials have to think twice before indulging in corruption particularly in our East Kameng District.
I suggest, EKSWCO should take corruptions in most of the departments in East Kameng district. There are many schools in the district which are facing acute shortage of teachers. This is hampering the growth of the students in the district.

Recruit deserving candidates on merit basis

I would like to bring to the notice of the common people a fact that haunts me a
lot. It is regarding the recent selection of peon/chowkidar-
The written exams of the above mentioned posts were held on 21st and 22nd April 2012. I thought that the recruitment would be a fair one as it took approximately 3 months for evaluation of the answer scripts of the candidates like that of APCS exams. Ultimately, the result was declared and the 13th day of July was scheduled to be the date of viva exam. There was a ray of hope for a post graduate candidate like me to be selected on merit basis. Few of my fellow candidates hoped for special recruitment under departmental quota for they have been serving the department for a long period in the status of contingency therein.
When the candidates were short listed, I was amazed to see that I have been dropped
from the list in spite of my qualification and proficiency, rather a few candidates
who were below the average during our school period and had been dropped out of school
a decade ago were selected. Thus, the hope for selection on merit basis has been
crushed. A few more candidates who have left the school in their early age were also
selected in place of those who are engaged as contingency for several years. Thus

EKSWCO never banned RTI activities

Apropos the letters published in your esteemed daily regarding the resolutions adopted in the conference of the East Kameng Social Welfare and Cultural Organization (EKSWCO), it is to clarify that EKSWCO never banned Right To Information (RTI) Act and RTI activities in East Kameng district as it is understood that once Act is being enacted no any Organization can put ban on it. So it is ridiculous claiming EKSWCO banned RTI activities in East Kameng dist, rather EKSWCO being an apex organization passed resolution to discourage using RTI as tools for personal and vindictive motive and it appealed the activists to restrain and refrain from misusing it, as sometimes, it seriously hampers the developmental activities in the district.

The foundation stone for construction of Greenfield airport was laid by the then Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil at Karsingsa. The people of Banderdewa circle are expecting lot from the Greenfield airport and they are against the shifting of airport project to other location.
Therefore, I on behalf of youth of Banderdewa, appeal the AAI authority and state Govt not to shift the Greenfield airport site from Karsingsa to Hollongi.

Irrigation and smaller farmers
Irrigation makes higher yields possible, affording a second or even third season of crops. But water is generally scarce and so rapid growth of tube wells has raised concerns about sustainability. Pricing of both water, and electricity for agricultural purposes, are increasingly being used to ensure water resources are being used more efficiently.
The International Water Management Institute, which was commissioned to study the impact of irrigation policy change in West Bengal, in its study found that the groundwater market which had flourished in rural areas shrunk. Smaller farmers had to pay more for their water, many turning to more expensive diesel irrigation or watering by hand. This was an unintended and unexpected negative impact of the reform on poorer families.
